Train, Work, Job! Is a post-school training and work experience programme that supports marginalised young people from across the Scottish Borders in developing practical employability skills through hands-on learning activities.

The principal beneficiaries are 16–24-year-olds from across the Scottish Borders who have become disengaged from mainstream education and training. Many experience poverty, neurodivergence, poor mental health, low confidence and have struggled in their employment pathway. The project prioritises those furthest from the labour market who have fallen through a gap in provision for their needs and require structured routine, accredited skills development, and sustained progressional support to move into employment, further education or training

Train, Work, Job! reaches out to young people in their communities to give them access to local traing sessions that introduce them to the activities and training opportunities that we offer in our 16-week programme at our Tweedbank workshop where they are expected to attend for at least 12 hours per week over 3 days.

The Workshop experience is designed to reflect the expectations of a real workplace, such as attendance, punctuality, behaviour and skills development, while still providing the tailored staff support needed to ensure that each participant, whatever barriers they face, can succeed.

Participants learn a wide range of core practical skills used across fabrication, manufacturing, and trades, while working collaboratively towards a shared outcome that embeds teamwork and co-working. Projects such as restoring and converting vintage horseboxes generate fantastic opportunities for all these outcomes.

All attendees have the opportunity to attain welding certification EN 9606-1, Employability awards SCQF 3/4 and have every tool used, technique mastered, and project completed evidenced for their onward journey beyond Train Work Job, alongside metrics of their time with us.

Train, Work, Job! Is funded by The Local employability Partnership through No-One Left Behind and the Kavli Trust. We are partnered by Skills Development Scotland, DWP, Youth Employability Coaches, Jobcentre Plus and all local secondary schools through which referrals can be made . Referrals for the programme can also be made directly through our contact page.
